For centuries, the agave has been revered by the people of Mexico and every part of the plant has found a use: its fibres for making rope, paper and textiles; its thorns for sewing and medicine; and its sap for fermenting and drinking.
Some of the ancient cultures believed drinking fermented agave had transformative effects capable of connecting you to the spiritual world.
But it wasn’t just the elixir of agave that held that connection.
Often at their side was the Xolo dog. These odd hairless creatures were more than just companions. They served as guardians, healers and even occasional food sources. But most importantly they were spirit guides, leading their masters through the underworld when the time came.
That connection between spirit and man’s best friend is not lost today – for some it’s known as the ‘Hair of the Dog’ – Pelo del Perro.
