Our labels are made from recycled agave fibre by a team of artisans in Oaxaca. Like our spirit, our labels represent local artisanal craftsmanship and help our efforts to reduce waste.
This is one of the many uses for agave, beyond mezcal, that makes this plant so special.
Leaves are collected and boiled to breakdown the starches that hold the longer and stronger fibres together. These strong and durable fibres are known as ixtle and have been used for centuries in making rope, fishing nets and textiles among a myriad of other things. The ixtle fibres are hand washed and separated before being shredded and mixed with water and a natural binding agent made from cactus, to form a mash. The mash is lifted onto metal screens to form sheets, before being dried and pressed to remove as much water as possible. Finally the sheets are air dried to create thick, textural paper.
